How old is my Goodman furnace?
The serial on a Goodman furnace sits inside the door, and its first four digits are the year and month it was built. A serial starting 1611 means November 2016. The model number printed beside it tells you what kind of furnace you have, which matters when someone quotes you a big repair.
Where to find the label on a Goodman furnace
Goodman puts the brand name on the outside of the furnace and the serial on a label inside the furnace door, as the CPSC's 2017 Goodman furnace recall describes. On an upflow furnace in a basement or closet, that usually means the lower door covering the blower. Turn the furnace off with the service switch on or near the cabinet, then lift the door off its tabs. The label is on the inside face of the door or on the cabinet wall behind it. Read it with a flashlight and keep your hands out of the blower compartment. If the furnace is in an attic lying on its side (a horizontal install), the door faces the service platform.
How to read the code
Goodman furnaces use the same ten-digit numeric serial as Goodman air conditioners: two digits of year, two digits of month, then a six-digit count. There are no letters. If you see 13 or higher in the month spot, you have misread a digit or are looking at a different label. The model number is where the furnace specifics live. On a model like GMVC960603BN, G is Goodman, M means upflow or horizontal (C would be downflow), V is a variable-speed blower (E is multi-speed, S single-speed), C is a two-stage gas valve (M modulating, S single-stage), 96 is the AFUE, and 060 is the input in thousands of BTU per hour.
| Layout | What it means | Years used |

What age means for a Goodman furnace
DOE's furnace analysis puts the average life of a non-weatherized gas furnace at about 21.4 years. Other industry charts land between 15 and 25 years. A Goodman in its late teens is in the zone where repair money deserves a hard look. The big age-related worry in any gas furnace is the heat exchanger, since a cracked or separated one can let flue gas, including carbon monoxide, into the airstream; inspecting it is a job for a licensed HVAC technician, and it belongs on the annual tune-up checklist. Other wear items are ignition parts, the draft inducer, the blower motor and the control board. Before paying for a big repair, check a few things. Start with the warranty. Goodman's current high-efficiency furnaces carry a lifetime heat exchanger limited warranty and 10-year parts coverage when registered within 60 days, so a failed heat exchanger on a registered unit may be a covered part with labor still billed. Then recalls. Eighty percent furnaces with models starting AMEH80, DM80HE or GME8 and serials starting 1609 to 1612 were recalled in 2017 for an ungrounded blower motor. Last, the numbers. Compare the repair to the replacement range above and to how many years the furnace likely has left.
How sure is this?
Official format. Goodman publishes how its serial numbers encode the date. We tested the goodman daikin rules against 17 serials, 6 of them with a date known from a recall notice, a printed label date or the maker. None decoded to a wrong year; codes whose year mark repeats show every possible reading. Always confirm with Goodman's serial lookup before you spend money on the answer.
Quick notes
- Read the model number for AFUE: a 96 or 97 means a condensing furnace with a drain line, an 80 means a standard-efficiency unit that vents differently.
- Ask for any heat exchanger diagnosis in writing, with how it was found and a carbon monoxide reading if one was taken.
- Run the serial through Goodman's warranty lookup before approving a part replacement.
- Change or check the filter monthly during heating season; ENERGY STAR lists it as the one routine homeowner task.
Common questions
Where is the serial number on a Goodman furnace?
On a label inside the furnace door, usually the lower blower door. The brand name is on the outside.
How long do Goodman furnaces last?
Goodman does not publish a lifespan. DOE's average for gas furnaces is about 21.4 years, and other industry guides give 15 to 25 years.
Is a cracked heat exchanger covered?
On a registered Goodman with a lifetime heat exchanger limited warranty, the part may be covered for the original owner. Labor usually is not. Check the warranty lookup and your certificate.
What does 080 in my Goodman model number mean?
The furnace input in thousands of BTU per hour, so 080 is about 80,000 BTU/h.
Was my Goodman furnace recalled?
The 2017 recall covered 80 percent models starting AMEH80, DM80HE or GME8 with serials beginning 1609 through 1612. Check the CPSC notice if yours matches.
