Example: a real Trane serial with its date on record. Type yours on the plate to replace it.

17103N6MF4 was made week 10 of 2017 (around March)

It's about 9 years old. A gas furnace lasts about 21.4 years on average (DOE), so in human years it's 35.

Is this wrong? Tell us Human years use the US life expectancy of 79 (CDC, 2024).

Most Trane furnaces print the manufacture date in plain text on the model and serial label, so look there first. If the date is missing, the serial still carries it: on a ten-character serial the first two digits are the year, on a nine-character one from 2002 to 2009 the first digit is, and older units use a year letter. The model number on the same label tells you the input size and helps a technician find the right parts.

Where to find the label on a Trane furnace

The CPSC's 2017 Trane furnace recall describes a white label on the left or right side of the unit listing the model and serial. On many installs that side panel is visible from the front once the access door is off, but in a tight closet you may need a phone camera slid alongside the cabinet. Turn the furnace off at its service switch before you take off a door. You only need to look, so leave wiring and the burner area alone.

How to read the code

Trane's furnace serials have changed twice. Since about 2010: ten characters, a two-digit year, a two-digit fiscal week, a day digit, then five more characters. From 2002 to 2009: nine characters starting with a single year digit, then the fiscal week. From 1983 to 2001: a year letter, then the week, using a fixed letter table. On the model, a code such as TUH2B080A9V shows 080 for about 80,000 BTU/h input. The 2017 recall listed Trane furnace models beginning TDC, TDD, TDE, TDH, TUC, TUD, TUE and TUH, which gives a sense of the common prefixes.

What age means for a Trane furnace

DOE puts the average gas furnace at about 21.4 years, and other industry charts give 15 to 25. Trane furnaces past 20 are common in older homes, and they can still run well, but each major part that fails at that age is a signal. Aging furnaces most often need ignition parts, inducer motors, blower motors or control boards, and the heat exchanger eventually wears out. Before you approve an expensive repair, check the label date against those life figures, and check whether the furnace was in the 2017 recall: units with serials starting 16304 through 16324, sold July and August 2016, could develop a loose ground wire in the junction box, and Trane offered a free replacement junction box. Ask for the diagnosis in writing, including any combustion or carbon monoxide readings. Trane runs an online warranty and registration page; registered units may still have parts coverage. Finally, compare the repair with the replacement range above and the years the furnace likely has left.

How sure is this?

Widely documented. Trane doesn't publish this code; it comes from recall notices, service literature and inspector references. We tested the trane rules against 17 serials, 7 of them with a date known from a recall notice, a printed label date or the maker. None decoded to a wrong year; codes whose year mark repeats show every possible reading. Always confirm with Trane's serial lookup before you spend money on the answer.

Quick notes

  • Trust the printed date on the label over a decoded serial if they disagree.
  • Near the start of a calendar year, a fiscal week of 01 or 52 can belong to the neighboring year.
  • If your furnace was installed in 2016, check the serial against the 2017 recall range.
  • The recall's model prefixes, TDC through TUH, cover most common Trane furnaces. A matching prefix alone doesn't mean yours was recalled. The serial range decides.

Common questions

Where is the label on a Trane furnace?

A white label on the left or right side of the cabinet, per the CPSC's 2017 recall notice. It is often visible with the front door off.

Does a Trane furnace label show the manufacture date?

Many do, in plain text. Use it if it is there.

How long does a Trane furnace last?

Trane does not publish a lifespan. DOE's gas furnace average is about 21.4 years, and most inspector charts give 15 to 25.

What does TUH or TDH at the start of my model mean?

They are Trane furnace series prefixes. The three digits later in the model, such as 080, show the input in thousands of BTU per hour.
